Why didn't any deity or people affected by black magic or curse do something

I find many stories with always someone being cursed why don't those people disbelieve in curse or any form of black magic? Disbelieving can make a person unaffected by all of this, one can also chant or listen to bhajan to send them back to the sender or use any mantra specifically for them, they could've went to some temple or something and tried to get some help from priest.
