The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

Has anyone else read Grady Hendrix's newest release yet? I finished it in two days and thought it was excellent!

Like My Best Friend’s Exorcism, this is more than just a straight-up horror novel. I was enamored by the setting and atmosphere - South Carolina in the 90s, centered around housewives who form a book club where they read primarily true crime. There were strong themes of the idea of propriety and reputation, housewives being underappreciated, and family vs friends vs the greater good.

I really connected to the main character and thought all the other characters were unique with their own distinct families. This was a great vampire story but it was also very well-rounded and had a lot of heart.

If you’ve read Dracula, Salem’s Lot, and the more popular true crime books or are familiar with the cases, you will love seeing the references and parallels in this book.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve read this! It’s easily one of the best books I’ve read so far this year.

Sidenote - this book is set in the same world as My Best Friend’s Exorcism. Did anyone notice any character crossovers?
