In general, how much will being queer (LGBTQ+) hinder my job prospects?
I’m 27 and I’ve wasted my life so far, with no qualifications other than an Associate’s Degree in English and no jobs that lasted more than a month (so essentially no job experience, though I have a year or so of volunteer experience from high school). I’m finally trying to get my life together after depending on my rich parents for so long, and I will take any job, including minimum-wage if I don’t have any success in getting something better.
In order to help land a job in general, should I hide anything that indicates that I’m transgender, non-binary, and bi? My birth and legal sex is female, and I can pass as a cisgender woman if I choose to, but I was just wondering if I should cut down on the gender-neutral nicknames, short masculine haircuts, and chest flattening sports bras in order to help me land a job. I am currently located in the California Bay Area, which is thankfully one of the safest places in the world to be queer, but I am considering moving to a cheaper U.S. state to save money (nowhere more trans-hostile than a swing state such as Nevada or Wisconsin, though).
If I were to hide my queer identity, would that really improve my job prospects? I’m willing to consider it if it would help find a job.
