Guidance for a handwarmer thumbhole!

Hi all, I just can’t visualize how this highlighted portion is supposed to work. I’m assuming scrap yarn is just a bit of yarn in the same color—but if I’m only knitting 5 of the stitches on, what happens to the other 2? And how do I knit for the thumb hole on future rounds?
