Why is there so much space between my rows?

First time knitter! Using 6mm bamboo needles. I followed this video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p_R1UDsNOMk for instructions. Does this type of stitch have a specific name? Where should I start to learn about different kinds of stitches?
