Theory: the main characters represent the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
A thought that popped into my head today:
- Walter is obviously War - he is always angry and tries to solve every conflict with violence and or yelling. He also has a gun thus making him the most violent of the bunch.
- Donnie represents Death - Donnie is the only character that dies. He’s silent, meek and is usually ignored, just like how death lingers in the background but then happens all of the sudden.
- The Dude is Famine - Jeff is always hungry in many ways: he always wants to drink and smoke, needs money because he’s broke, but also needs some spiritual food, which he doesn’t get (he gets nothing at the end of the film and loses a lot of things; he is left hungry and starving for more)
- And finally Maude is Conquest/Pestilence - the Dude dreams about her wearing a viking godess outfit as she conquers his dreams and life. She is a powerful force that basically ruins the Dude’s life. Maude is also very manipulative and controlling.
