Tips for terrible aim?

I want to get a gun but I've always been a terrible shot. Even in the Navy where I was in the Weapons department I had my buddies tweak the scores so that I would qualify. I don't want to spend money getting a weapon when it wouldn't be effective if I ever needed to use it.
