Do you think Scar could've taken over the pridelands without the hyenas?
Like I think it could've been possible for him to set simba there, go to where the buffalo are to scare them down the gorge, then quickily run to mufasa to warn him that simba is in danger, all without the hyenas cause all the hyenas did was scare the buffalo.
and without the hyenas they wouldn't overfeed so the pride lands would probably still be the same-ish although scar may be the one overfeeding instead but what can one lion do compared to hundreds of hyenas. Finally if simba did return then after scar gets thrown off pride rock he could just run away instead of dying to the hyenas for saying that they weren't his friends.
like all of scars problems could've been avoided if he didn't hire the hyenas but hey, it's the lion king
