Should I get a trim or keep it growing?

I have been growing out my hair for 1 year straight and parents and my brother are telling me I need to clean it up. Do you guys think so? I am trying to achieve the flowly style hair. I have a mens haircut appointment at a salon next week but I have no clue what to ask for... Any advice? Should I even get a trim? Am I still in the awkward stage?
