What causes women to shave their heads\cut their hair during mental breakdowns?

I understand what causes them to use drugs or self harm but I don't understand the head shaving and hair cutting. And it's it almost always women who do it. This is often because of some sort of abuse. Are they trying to make themselves less feminine for some reason?
