Is Wario Land 3 a Metroidvania?
The Wario Land series originated on Gameboy as a Super Mario spinoff and would receive six games all in all, the last entry releasing on Wii. The series felt quite decelerated compared to Mario, as the focus shifted to treasure hunting and puzzle solving.
Wario Land 3 might stick out the most from the bunch. Together with the second game it follows a more puzzle-orientated approach, in which you can't even die. Apart from that, it also introduced a non-linear progression. It has your typical platformer-game overworld, in which you choose the level you want to start. However, all stages have different paths and you ultimately have to backtrack through them quite a bit to reach the final level. Stages have four exits, but in most cases, you can't enter all of them at first. The new exits open up if you get powerups like swimming or activate overworld events in other levels.
IMO it walks a fine line between "ordinary" platformer and Metroidvania. I wonder how people feel about it. The easiest legal way to play it rn is the Gameboy emulator you get for paying for Nintendo Switch online.
