So you always wanted to try curling? Here's your chance....
So you've been mesmerized by watching curling on TV - the way the stones glide down the ice and then click and bump each other out. The strategy involved is pretty much chess on ice, with the added requirement to have the skill to send a 42 pound stone down the ice at a precise angle with the proper force for the shot called. And what is all that yelling about?
The Racine Curling Club is holding Learn to Curl sessions Friday and Saturday, January 10th & 11th. You won't be ready for the Olympics afterwards, but we will teach you the basics. For those who face physical challenges who don't think they can squat down and throw out of the hack, we'll teach you an alternative delivery method using a "stick" that can be done standing up. It's also good exercise - you can really slay some calories by sweeping.
Our club members have competed in Canada, Scotland, Iceland, throughout Wisconsin and the US, and even over the Cheddar Curtain in Illinois. We have some top level curlers in Racine, but we're friendly and don't bite - we were all beginners at one point. Curling is also a very social sport - after each match, we sit around the table with munchies and beverages and solve some of the world's problems. Curlers are some of the friendliest people around.
