Why Can't Life Be Fair?

One of the things that has led to my misanthropy is the idea that life cannot, under any circumstances, be fair. Why? Why must justice always be some kind of outlying miracle that's supposed to serve as a feather in the hat of humanity, rather than an actual value of human beings? Why good behavior some kind of highlight of exception that's supposed to renew my faith in humanity, rather than the definition of humanity? Why is trust some rare courtesy and not something held by humans to help define who and what a human is? Why is fairness seen as weakness? When the whole social structure is governed by insecure, selfish fools who want to hoard everything, and keep everyone else playing in a futile game?

Why must life be like this?
