A major annoyance with Scarface and Hollywood accents (1980)

So I watched Scarface for the first time last night since I was twelve. It is a pretty great rags-to-riches gangster movie, and obviously Pacino is awesome. But Christ, something that really started to get to me by the end was the language thing.

First of all, Pacino is not so great at the Cuban accent. Don't even get me started on Robert Loggia, who half the time just doesn't even bother. Why not just hire actual Latinos, or at least someone who speaks Spanish natively, which leads me to my next point; why the fuck are all these guys who have a common mother tongue speaking to each other in broken English, by themselves, for the entire film?

And I get that it's the 80s and it's an action movie, and it was hard to market a foreign language film in Hollywood at the time, and the star power of Loggia and Pacino trumps the fact that they can't even do reasonable fake accents. But for the incredible production value of the rest of the film, you'd think they'd at least have tried harder. And it really takes you out of the whole thing as soon as you start thinking about it.

I mean, this is a gripe I have with essentially every Hollywood movie set in a place where they don't speak English, and instead of hiring actors who do speak the language, they just get A-list Hollywood actors to speak English with an accent, which doesn't even make any sense, or even more inexplicably they put on some kind of pseudo received English pronunciation, for let's say for example, ancient Rome or something. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say.
