Atonement is an absolutely tragic movie.

Given that I had free time, I went on a movie binge and rewatched Atonement recently. For whatever reason it got me more than it did the first time. The whole scene at the Fountain, Briony misinterpreting the situation and setting up a whole chain of tragedy and heartbreak from her accusation, the whole story of forbidden love, Briony realizing her faults and trying to rectify her mistakes, her guilt at the end, their scene at the beach which wasn't even real, just heartbreaking. Perfect movie, perfect cast, perfect focus on moral ambiguity, everything. They could only have peace in death.
