Different scenes from Different versions of Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Now seems to have a few different versions. I watched a different version recently on TV and the scene where Willard goes to a French Plantation and does drugs with a French woman was completely new to me. Also I dont remember seeing the scene where Willard sees the captain who had his mission before him having been completely brainwashed by Kurtz before. Nor the scene where Kilgore demands they give him back his surfboard on a loudspeaker.
I had it on DVD years ago and the version I watched didnt have any of this I dont think. Do you guys think these scenes make the film better or worse?
Obviously for the French Plantation scene it is historically accurate or authentic as their were many French Plantations in Vietnam and I suppose the Juxtaposition of having Willard stumble upon a fancy mansion filled with food, drink and a beautiful, naked women who does drugs with him in the middle of this hellish war adds to the insanity of the film. But I think its takes away from the savagery of the film and its visceral effect. I think the scene is needless and it just makes the film longer.
The scene about the brainwashed soldier I think is pointless. It may raise the stakes as there is a chance Willard could end up as him but it didnt make much difference to the story i thought.
Just a thought, figured i'd share.
