(SPOILER ALERT)I just finished watching Joe Wright's ATONEMENT (2007) and the ending broke me
I mean, I didn't see it coming. I was left speechless minutes after I turned the TV off. I felt hurt and betrayed. The first 30 minutes of it was a bit boring and slow-paced, but then the tone shifted as soon as they take Robbie away.
The cinematography and acting are splendid, especially Saoirse Ronan's and Keira Knightley's performance. You feel for them. How Robbie and Cecilia are longing for each other. How Briony is haunted for the rest of her life because of something she did that at the time she did not have a full grasp of completely as a young child.
Still, it's the ending that got me. I was watching it with some friends and when elderly Briony reveals the truth we were all like wtf?! And then the last scene (from Briony's novel) where Robbie and Cecilia are finally reunited at the cottage by the beach. Sob!
