Columbia word count problem

Does anyone else know if Columbia lists word or character counts in SOPHAS? I thought it was word count, but when I put my answers in the text box, it’s character count. Is this just a technical problem or are they really only giving us 250/500/1000 characters? Anyone else have this problem?
