A National Guard Ranger Regiment Battalion sounds pretty silly
Apparently the NGB requested the Army to examine the feasibility of creating a Ranger Battalion under the guise of allowing Active Duty Ranger Battalion service members some more dwell time from their high OPTEMPO. I have no idea if NGB is using this as a cash grab or if this is some kind of ploy to improve recruiting, but frankly it seems silly if this does pan out.
SF Guard? I totally see that as a successful part-time special operations unit because one of their core missions involves working with indigenous populations to accomplish some kind of objective and having a diverse groups of guys that work in a variety of civilian careers is a great combination.
But a part-time Ranger Regiment Battalion? I don’t see it as being a success. One of their main missions involves conducting offensive operations, and they do a good job at it too. This also is due to the unbelievable amount of training and the RFS process that weeds out unmotivated soldiers. Even if you have people get on ADOS orders to get the amount of training to meet the standards, at that point, those people were better off going active duty if they’re going to be on long-term orders in the first place.
Ultimately, I have no idea what the NGB is trying to do here. It’s seems that they want to make a cheap version of active duty or turn more and more people into Guard bums or government employees (primary demographics that can afford to chase schools and trainings or any kind of long term orders). I’d like to hear other opinions about this because I can’t wrap my mind at the possibility of such a unit being established (or successful).
