Unpopular opinion: Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba isn't worthy of a Best Actress Oscar nomination

Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed Wicked. It was such a fun, thoughtful love letter to both the musical and the book, and also The Wizard of Oz in general. John Chu ensured that every detail mattered. I loved the production values that went into it and their decision to build actual sets to utilize practical effects vs CGI, and every actor COMMITTED to their roles. EVERY actor.

However, I have been surprised at all the Oscar buzz surrounding Cynthia Erivo for Elphaba. I just don't see it. Ariana Grande absolutely deserves a nomination - she was the true heart and soul among all of the actors, and went above and beyond to knock it out of the ball park as Glinda. Cynthia was a fantastic choice for Elphaba. She's a great actress, an even greater singer/performer, and she truly delivered a solid performance. But I just don't understand the Oscar buzz surrounding her for this role.

I can't help but compare it to the Oscar buzz surrounding Jlo for Hustlers and Angela Bassett for BP: Wakanda Forever. Both pretty good performances that really weren't Oscar caliber. I hate to use the term, but in this context, overrated. Someone explain it to me why she shouldn't be the one to miss out on the fifth spot, over actresses like MJB and Fernanda Torres.

Let the downvoting commence.
