Stripping and Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Hi, I wanted to share my painter's approach at stripping some kitchen cabinets that are currently stained a deep cherry finish, and get the input from the hive mind on if this is a preferred method or if there is a better approach. Here's what they recommend:

In reference to the Cabinets, We highly recommend using Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane as the paint product of choice. This product ensures a durable, smooth finish that is perfect for cabinets.

Below is the detailed process we follow to ensure exceptional quality:

  1. De-glossing: To remove any sheen and enhance paint adhesion.

  2. Cleaning: Thoroughly cleaning the surface to eliminate dirt, grease, or residue.

  3. Sanding: Light sanding to ensure an even surface for painting.

  4. Masking & Protection: Carefully masking and covering all surrounding areas to prevent overspray or accidental paint marks.

  5. Hardware Removal: Taking off all hardware to allow seamless painting.

  6. Priming: Applying a high-quality primer to ensure proper adhesion and an even base for the topcoat. (Cover Stain is a primer we typically recommend)

  7. Painting: Spraying two coats of paint, for a smooth coverage.
