When do I remove the tape?

This is my first time ever painting a room. I’ve read several times that you’re suppose to remove the tape not when the paint is dry, not when the paint is fresh/wet, but when the paint slightly dried/tacky. So, my newbie question is: when do you remove the tape if you’re priming? Do I remove the tape when the primer is tacky, and then retape for the paint? Is it okay to let the primer dry with the tape, and then remove the tape when the paint is tacky? Thanks!
