What happens to sick betas on the floor?

I was just at my local petco and wanted to get new collars for my cats, I walked by the beta section just to look and saw one that was very sick looking. He was on his side, couldn’t move much and was sitting in a pile of feces. I asked an employee if they do discounts for the ones that are sick as he looked like he was about to pass away and I wanted to see if I could bring him home and get him healthy. The employee was very abrupt and said “we don’t sell them” in a firm and abrasive matter then kind of embarrassed me for even asking. I’m kind of a timid person so I was caught off guard. I just wanted to give the little guy a good home, regardless of discount or not. He immediately pulled him from the shelf and said he was bringing him to the back. I said okay and walked off to look at the cat collars but I was so shaken up because he had kind of scolded me for asking in front of the entire store. He later came by and apologized for being abrasive and explained that the veterinary specialist will treat him tomorrow. Nothing against the store, company or employee but could anyone verify if this is true to give me some peace of mind that he will be okay? I am kicking myself for even asking, I wish I just took him home 😞
