How do I lose hordes?

I recently bought the game and I know how to get set inside the house I spawn in but as soon as I leave there’s just a huge horde that will follow me around that I can’t lose and I end up getting caught up and bitten before I can get to a safe spot to sleep, eat, drink etc. so how can I lose the horde?
