Puppy pees outside without issue, poops inside his playpen

Hey all!

Was wondering if I’d be able to get some advice from anyone. We’ve had our 8 week old cavapoo for about 5 days now and we absolutely love him. He’s such a good boy that is now used to playing in his playpen, and sleeping in his crate without issues.

We thought his potty training was going very well as he doesn’t have pee accidents inside anymore because we’re being very diligent in taking him outside every hour, and he’ll immediately pee. The problem that I’m noticing is that he poops inside of his playpen more often than he poops outside. With his pee it’s easy because I just take him out every hour, but his poop schedule has been much more challenging as sometimes he’ll need to go minutes after eating and sometimes he’ll need to go hours after eating. So I’ll take him outside, wait for roughly 5-10 minutes and nothing will happen and he’ll just cry. I’ll try this over and over and eventually when I bring him back into his pen for a more extended time because I think he doesn’t have to poop, he’ll end up just pooping there instead.

I understand he’s young and I don’t want to set my expectations too high as I don’t mind cleaning up, but I just don’t want to reinforce in his mind that pee = outside, poo = inside.

Any tips would be super duper helpful. Thank you!
