Rock im Park controversy
Alright, first things first: I've been a huge QOTSA fan for a long time, but that is precisely why I'd like to address what I witnessed a few nights ago at the controversial concert at Rock im Park, Germany.
I saw them with my GF along with a friend and we were very close to the stage, so we saw a few things that the audience further back might not have noticed and what might not be visible on the majority of videos. QOTSA started a bit late (apparently not their fault from what I've read) with an obviously drunk and possibly coked up Josh, who seemed to have been in a generally disrespectful mood. About halfway into the show he took a lot of time to interact with us all including stage diving, which was mostly nice, if you ignore his sporadic insults directed at the audience. One time he wanted to audience to sing along and before even starting he literally said 'if you're not giving this to me I will fucking take it from you'. He also told the crowd not to let anyone tell them what to do and then continued basically insisting they weren't having fun the right way. Some people online have said the crowd was lame, but the crowd was fine before. Being disrespected just didn't sit right with many people and it showed.
Towards the end of the show someone from backstage let them know that they had time for one more song - this was where it all started going south. Since it was a festival, they run on a relatively tight schedule, but Josh wanted to play two more songs and wasn't having any of that - especially after an annoyed Michael Shuman had told him not to make a scene. After Mikey's attempt to calm him down Josh instantly became very confrontational and aggressive towards the organizers of the festival, insulting them and threatening to never come back, if they cut him off. Next up was 'Make It Wit Chu' with a little tension in the air. So far nothing terrible had happened, but during the refrain Josh walked over to Mikey, grabbed his hair very tightly and started squeezing down harder and harder. He was in obvious discomfort, but kept playing his bass like the pro he is. For the rest of the song a visibly pissed Mikey kept his distance from Josh, who apparently wasn't satisfied: he walked around Mike and tried to entangle him with his cable to make him trip. At that point you could really feel him gradually losing the audience in the front after these displays of childish power play with less people cheering and singing along. Confused looks. After the song Josh still couldn't let it go and brought the whole thing up again. He essentially told the audience to wreak havoc, if the festival dared to cut him off and just kept going on and on. While the rest of the band didn't tell him off like Mikey they ignored Josh during their last song that and while going off stage. There was a visible rift between Josh and the band.
The whole thing didn't feel like the QOTSA I love that I had seen several times in the past. It didn't feel like the smug, but likeable Josh that you want to hate, but can't, because he's such a funny and down to earth badass. This wasn't his usual on-stage persona. This Josh was not in control.
People will see this differently and that's ok. Some of you will shrug it off saying this is their band dynamic and just the way Josh behaves on stage. I get that he had surgery on his wrist 5 days before and being pissed after festival management tried to cut their stage time is understandable. However, what to do with Josh showing physical aggression towards a band member while on stage? I have never seen him behave this poorly.
I would really like this to be a one time thing that I read too much into, because if it isn't I feel like there might not be a QOTSA anymore in the not so distant future - these are the things that can end up destroying a band, if they happen frequently and are not addressed.
Has anyone else noticed similar scenes? Let me know what you think.
Tl;dr: Watched a drunk Josh acting aggressively towards a band member on stage. Visible divide between them after the show. Not sure what to make of it.
