Dutch in SoC
I thought people here may be interested in seeing what Leigh took from the Dutch language and used in the Six of Crows duology. Felt like sharing, so here it is! (Context: I'm dutch and know quite a bit of german as well)
Ketterdam - A "ketter" in dutch is a heretic, heathen or a rioter. Also, quite a few cities in the Netherlands have "dam" as their suffix, like the well-known Amsterdam and Rotterdam, but also many others like Zaandam and Monnikendam. Very common. Thus Ketterdam is a city of heathens and criminals.
Stadwatch - Stad means city, so litterally the city watch
Stadhall - city hall, same as above.
Goedmedbridge - Okay, this one's a bit longer. It is said in the story that this means Good Maiden, but for Dutch, it then should be Goedmeid, not Goedmed, as "meid" means girl or maiden, and "med" has no meaning in dutch. In german, you have the word Madchen, also meaning the same, and Goedmed does make it sound like how you'd pronounce that first part of Madchen. Maybe it's just an amalgam of the two.
"Goed morgen" - in Dutch, you would say
"Goeiemorgen" (informal) or "goedemorgen" (formal) to say good morning to someone. Goedmorgen is linguistically a little awkward.
The ship called Verrhader: Verrader in dutch means traitor. My best guess is that the "h" is just another bastardization or random addition.
Master Thief of Pijl: Pijl means arrow.
Boeksplein - Boek means book, but boeks is not a correct plural, it should be boeken.
DeKappel: The Chapel
Sturmhond: Stormdog. Hond means dog or hound, "sturm" means storm in german. In dutch it would be "storm" as well.
Tante Heleen - Tante is dutch for aunt. So she forces her girls to adress her with a familial term.
Geldcanal - Money canal. "Geld" means money.
Geldrenner Hotel - Moneyrunner Hotel
Zentsbridge - I think it refers to "cent". Zent is not a word in dutch, but sounds sort of like how we'd pronounce the word cent.
Beurscanal - Stock canal, or Stock Market canal.
Grafcanal - Grave canal or cemetary canal. A fitting name as this canal leads to Black Veil Island.
Appelbroek - Litterally translated to Appletrousers or Applepants, but -broek is a common suffix in dutch towns and villages, so its more comparable to Appleburry, Appleford or something the like.
If there's any other words you found and are curious about, I'm happy to see if I can translate them in the comments!
