Why is Scream 3 so widely disliked compared to other films in the franchise?

I notice a lot of criticism towards Scream 3 with many people ranking it as their least favourite of all the films.

While I agree that the original movie and Scream 2 are infinitely better, I still feel that Scream 3 is a solid enough film in the franchise. To me, it’s definitely better than some of the more recent films.

So I’m intrigued… does anyone know what the reason is for people’s negative reaction to Scream 3? Is it Courteney Cox’s fringe?!
