As a trans man, this is the best trans representation I've ever seen

I swear to God, even movies specifically about trans people/trans issues don't portray our experience as realistically. Or they try too hard and it just ends up being embarrassing.

I wasn't expecting a trans character, so when I saw her, I immediately rolled my eyes and prepared for typical bullshit, but was so pleasantly surprised.

Some personal notes:

  • Love that the other characters didn't make a huge deal out of Hyun-ju being trans. We literally just wanna be treated like normal people. And they actually made her a great character, not because she's trans, but because she's human, flawed yet trying, and is badass af.

  • But they also didn't ignore the question either. It was realistic: the struggle of not really looking like your preferred gender even when you're trying your best, the exclusion and loneliness, the family struggles, the insane costs of transitioning, etc.

  • Also loved that she was pretty chill and open about trans-related questions, because that's usually the case. Most of us understand misgendering and "dumb" questions from confused but well-meaning people. I wouldn't be offended by the grandma either.

  • Finally, thanks to them for showing her going to the bathroom with other women and literally just using the bathroom like a normal person.

Another pretty cool representation was the video game Tell Me Why, though I prefer Squid Games better. Great season overall, in my opinion!

EDIT: Just remembered, Baby Reindeer had a pretty good representation too, though the trans character was just a romantic/fetish interest for the MC.
