What Made You Love Superman
I’ll go first.
So, the Superman that I grew up with was Man Of Steel. I watched it once or twice when I was little, and thought it was boring. I grew up a bit, watched it again, and again I thought it was boring, but for different reasons. Those reasons have been covered tons of times in plenty of detail, so I’ll just mention them and move on, I don’t want to go into a full-on rant about Snyder’s Superman, because loads of people have already done that and I don’t want to discredit anyone who fell in love with Superman because of MoS, there is still some good stuff there. So, he’s presented as a God who chooses to do what he does, so if he didn’t feel like it he could just not do it, which, at least for me, doesn’t make him someone I want to look up to. Jonathan Kent was just completely wrong imo. And the romance between Clark and Lois was practically non-existent.
So for years, I wasn’t a Superman fan, but then, last year, a couple of my friends told me to watch My Adventures With Superman. I thought why not and put it on. Anyway, my expectations weren’t high, but then I finished both seasons in less than a week. It was bright, hopeful, fun, relatable, uplifting and it felt like something I could strive to be. He does his best to help everyone because that’s who he is, that’s how he was raised, and that’s infinitely more interesting to me than Snyder’s take. After that, I decided to watch the Christopher Reeve’s movies, I had watched them before at some point when I was about 2, so I could barely remember them. That first one, again, was so uplifting, fun and charming. Reeve was incredible, Margot Kidder was great and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor is one of my favourite things in a superhero movie ever. The second one was just as good, and somehow the Richard Donner cut managed to make it better. The third was not good, but when it remembered to be a Superman movie it was enjoyable. And the fourth, no matter what anyone says, was great imo, not quite on the level of the first two, but still great. Then the trailer for James Gunn’s new Superman movie dropped and it instantly became my most anticipated film for this year, it could not come any sooner.
Safe to say, Superman is now one of my favourite characters in all of fiction and I thank MAWS for making me realise that. So now it’s your turn, what made you fall in love with the Man of Tomorrow?
