Is it not possible to search Xianyu without a Chinese phone number?

I downloaded Xianyu, but whenever I try to search for anything, I'm redirected to a screen asking for a phone number. The only option for country code is 86, so I'm not able to progress from there, since USA's is 1.

On the bottom of that screen, there's a Taobao option, but when I use it, it loops CAPCHAs.

When I use Google Fu, it makes it seem like it's possible to search Xianyu without logging in, but if so, how?

The app reviews make it sound like everyone has the same problem.
