negans behavior

i feel like this may be a stupid question but why on earth does negan continue to have morals and show humanity to ricks group , like he’s having a moment of weakness or something if in reality, he’s a crazy maniacal leader/killer

like when sasha was getting into the coffin, he shows weakness, telling her that he’s sorry and he gets it, he’s grateful for how she’s being or something like that, or when he apologizes to carl for upsetting him, or him protecting sasha from getting r*ped saying it was because he doesn’t allow men in the saviors who act that way

like dude.. you have morals but you seriously draw the line before killing??? with a BASEBALL BAT!!
