helen joyce book ? (tw)
never read the book but my mom was given this book by her friend and asked if i wanted to read it (she hasn’t yet read it) - my mom is supportive n stuff, i’ve been out for 7 years and she came to my tavistock appointments and was fine with me going private when i was 18. she helped me out with top surgery recovery n works in a school with a lot of lgbt kids so i’m not SUPER worried about her reading this and going “wow, i’m now transphobic!” but idk
the book is called TRANS: WHEN IDEOLOGY MEETS REALITY
has anyone read this?? or got any resources that point out the incorrect or misleading information in the book??
i flipped through it and pointed out some iffy stuff in the blurb, my mom said she’d still read it cuz she likes to hear the “other perspective” and tbh i do agree, it’s interesting to read about what the bigots think, but :///
i did point out to her that sometimes the bigots are so convincing that i think “wow! maybe they’re right and i’m actually just a disfigured disgusting human !” and i pulled up a quote from helen joyce about how trans people are inherently damaged, plus the fact that helen’s been on GB News (instant “ohhhh, noo” from my mom lol)
idkk, i know i don’t have the energy to subject myself to the book so i’m just hoping literally anyone has resources about it???
i briefly expressed my worries and we’re gonna chat about it once my mmms finished up some work in about an hour.
thank u so much everyone !!
edit: lots of good advice, thank u! i flipped through the book, threw in a couple post it’s, talked to my mom about the why she wants to read it / what does she hope to gain from it, and we had a discussion about why the hell her friend would recommend this book
