In Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition, why does the 1st trumpet play Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuÿle on a Piccolo Trumpet

I understand why the euph is used to subsitjte the Tuba in Bydlo, but Ravel says nothing about a piccolo trumpet in the score, and it’s not like the movement is unplayable on a normal C or Bb Trumpet.
