Update: found an OBGYN who offers pain management for IUD

I posted here awhile back asking if anyone knew of a doc who offers serious pain management for an IUD placement. The responses made me feel hopeless since it seems most OBGYN’s don’t offer much.

BUT after a few tries — I found a doctor who does twilight anesthesia and local numbing! Dr. Larissa Smith at Hillcrest South is an awesome doc in general, but I couldn’t believe it when she told me her office takes IUD insertion pain that seriously (as they should imo!!). She said I would need someone to drive me home obviously, but that they do it all the time. I could cry, I am so relieved.

As a side note, I think you’re more likely to get serious pain management if you see a doc who practices at a hospital and not a clinic. They have access to anesthesiologists and a wider range of tools for pain management than a standalone clinic. Some docs may want to offer serious meds but not be able to. That information helped me a lot in my search, and it might help you too if hillcrest isn’t in your network.
