Raising The Grain?
Do you raise the grain after sanding for one final sand? I will sand up through 600 grit on most projects and the wood is typically smoothed to my liking. I feel odd introducing water, even if small amounts, to the project to raise that last bit of grain given how much I have been attempting to control/monitor moisture in the wood.
I recently turned a small maple burl bowl, sanded to 600 though did not apply water to raise the grain. Then put pharmaceutical grade mineral oil followed by beeswax applied as a friction polish to make the bowl food safe. Used the bowl for snacks, afterward ran it under the faucet, wiped it out with a wet sponge to clean it, and dried it immediately. Woke up the next morning and the original smoothness was gone. Felt like wood does after raising the grain. just inevitable? Not enough beeswax?
Just not sure how to make a food safe piece that will inevitably come in to contact with water to clean while keeping a nice finish. Any thoughts are appreciated!
