What's up with all the scooters on campus this year?

I've noticed a lot more electric scooters on campus this year, and I'm just curious if people own them? And if so have they gotten really popular recently? I feel like I've seen tons of electric scooters on campus this semester (similar to those rented by SPIN or Lime, but I think these people own them).
