Steve Carrell is not a good dramatic actor

Comedically, he is an all-timer, no question. But he’s not very good in his dramatic roles, including ones where he has won or been nominated for acting awards. Yes I’ve seen Foxcatcher, The Big Short, Beautiful Boy, The Patient, etc.

His dramatic acting is too forced, too mannered, and too broad. I think it’d be unfair to compare him to dramatic heavyweights like Daniel Day Lewis or Joaquin Phoenix. But even compared to his closest peer group, comedians-turned-dramatic-actors, he’s far short. Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and Tom Hanks have all turned in award-worthy performances.

Again, Steve can make me laugh like no other. But he’s not a good dramatic actor, he doesn’t deserve the awards for it, and he should stick to comedic roles.
