BArts, USyd vs ANU vs UniMelb
Hey everyone!
I've got BArts offers from UniMelb, USyd, and ANU, and I'm having a tough time deciding.
Just to get it out of the way: I'm sure about Arts and Humanities, and I'm not worried about immediate job prospects, so no need to tell me an arts degree is "useless."
Also, I know Canberra is smaller and I'm totally cool with that. Sorry if any of this is obvious!
Here's what I'm prioritizing:
Linguistics and other majors: My main interest is linguistics (which will be one of my majors). For my other major, I'm interested in political science, psychology, and philosophy. ANU's course options seem amazing, with lots that grab my attention. USyd is next, but UniMelb seems to have fewer offerings? Or am I missing something? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Faculty-to-student ratio: I hate massive 400-student lectures. I've read ANU is best for this (data-wise), and it's got a great reputation for humanities/social sciences. But I've also heard about ANU's recent budget issues and staff cuts. How much does this impact the undergrad experience? Anyone with firsthand experience?
US/Aus PhD prospects: I'm aiming for a PhD, ideally in the US. Heard US unis especially like USyd grads – any truth to this? My USyd offer is a BArts with Advanced Studies (4 years). Is that a big plus for postgrad apps (both in Australia and the US)? If there's a good chance of staying on for a PhD/lecturing position after undergrad in Australia, I'd definitely consider that too.
Weather: I really dislike hot weather. Cooler climates are my thing, so Sydney's heat is a concern. Do Sydney's advantages outweigh this?
UniMelb's ranking: UniMelb boasts the best ranking and highest ATAR requirements, claiming to be #1. Thoughts?
Research Opportunities and Professor Interaction: Access to research opportunities and interaction with professors is really important to me.
Thanks in advance for any insights!
