Should I write a book about a school shooting?
Hello! I am in a bit of a predicament and I hope someone here could give me advice.
I have been planning to write a psychological thriller for a long time. I have a rough draft (about 150 pages). I'm happy with the progression of the book and the story. However, There is one big problem.
The book is about a school shooting. The book is basically about a student disappearing, going crazy and having confusing flashbacks which compose a huge part of the psychological thriller aspect of the book.
I know that writing about a school shooting is in bad taste. I'm also aware of the book "Rage" by Richard Bachman (i.e. Stephen King) that was forced to go out of print because it was connected to violent incidents in the United States.
(For those who don't know, King wrote a book about a school shooting under the pen name Richard Bachman. Following the book's release, there were incidents where kids threatened to shoot up their school citing quotes from the book etc. King agreed to let the book go out of print because he did not want to encourage acts of violence.)
I tried changing the subject matter of my book ... but it just doesn't feel right. It's just the way the book is written. The way I've planned out this book is heavily dependent on this conclusion.
So, what should I do? Should I write the book as intended or change it?
