How are they doing now? I am having the same issue and just ordered diffusers to maybe soothe the resident cat's anxiety but I worry it won't be enough.

Same here, I just moved in to a new apartment and my roommate brought her cat as well. My cat has refused to leave my room even after a month and whenever she does see the other cat she hisses and runs away. It was also doesn’t help that he tries to chase my cat the minute she runs off :/

I would 100% recommend the Feliway multi-cat diffuser if you haven't tried it yet. It came in a couple days after I commented on this post and my cats are now cuddling, grooming each other, and sometimes playing. Puzzle feeders to keep them close but distracted helped a lot, and high value treats in each others' presence made a lot of difference too.
